Outstanding Three-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Incised Spouting Whale and Shorebird Motifs, Stamped "B. EDMANDS & CO. / CHARLESTOWN, MA", circa 1840, cylindrical form with heavily-tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a shorebird holding a worm in its beak. Reverse decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a spouting whale atop waves with heavy dashed details to body. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Scarce maker's mark with extraordinary, nautical-themed designs. Significant professional restoration throughout. This includes some painted touch-up to incised shorebird as well as a minor amount of touch-up to water spouting from the whale. Shallow chipping to rim. H 15 3/4".
