Very Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Bathing Beauty Decoration, Stamped "EDMANDS & CO.," Barnabas Edmands, Charlestown, MA, circa 1860, cylindrical jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a standing woman in Victorian bathing suit, carrying a parasol. The finely-rendered and historically accurate portrait includes a vine-patterned dress, bloomers, headband, and curled-tipped shoes. Additional cobalt highlights appear at the maker's mark and capacity mark. The only incised example of Edmands stoneware that we have seen, this jug's exquisite and extremely rare figural design rank it among the finest works from this Boston pottery known. Excellent condition with the following minor flaws: a small in-the-firing contact mark to side of spout, a tiny glazed-over nick to front of spout, a small in-the-firing base chip, a very minor surface nick near base on front, and some light staining. H 15 3/4".
