Scarce Stoneware Spittoon with Elaborate Cobalt X Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, wheel-thrown form with recessed opening in top, carved oval opening at shoulder, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with large cobalt X designs. Cobalt wreath decoration surrounding opening at shoulder. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Among the finest Harrisburg examples of the form that we have offered. Horizontal cracks to top of rim, one including a small flake. One handle with a small chip and short crack. H 5" ; Diam. 9 1/2".
