Scarce Stoneware Spittoon with Elaborate Cobalt X and Floral Decorations, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, wheel-thrown form with recessed opening in top, carved oval opening at shoulder, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated on the front with large cobalt X designs flanking a wreath at the opening. Reverse decorated with a brushed floral motif. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Reverse impressed with cobalt-accented Cowden & Wilcox maker's mark. Among the finest Harrisburg examples of the form that we have offered. Horizontal cracks to top of rim, one including a small flake. One handle with a small chip and short crack. Some scratches to top surface. Wear and a shallow chip around top edge. Thin cracks to top edge. A 1 3/8" chip to one handle. Base chips. A salt drip to top and shoulder. Minor crazing to base area. H 5 1/8" ; Diam. 9 1/2".
