Scarce Four-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG: PA," circa 1865, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a triple-stemmed tulip plant bearing two blossoms. Freehand cobalt "4" to shoulder. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Unusual form and size. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced Pennsylvania collection, purchased by the consignor between 1963 and 1975. A 5" crack from rim on reverse. Light staining. H 9 1/4" ; Diam. 13".
