Two Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Advertising Jars, Western PA origin, circa 1875, one stenciled "WEAVER & BOLEY / DEALER IN / STAPLE & FANCY / GROCERIES. / BRIDGEPORT. PA.," the other stenciled "F. PHILLIPS. / FINE / GROCERIES & C. / COR. FIFTH AVE. / & / CHESTNUT ST. / PITTS." Both with freehand cobalt brushwork. Bridgeport jar with staining to surface and a 3 3/4" in-the-firing line to base. Pittsburgh jar with scattered exfoliation and spattered white paint to upper half of jar, chips and a short in-the-firing crack to one handle, a small chip and minor wear to interior of rim, a small in-the-firing ping to rim on reverse, and a tight star-shaped spider crack on underside, extending a short distance onto base in a few places. H (of Pittsburgh jar) 14 1/2".
