Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a large brushed design of a long-tailed bird with spotted wing, perched a wide tree stump. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Desirable size and form, similar to a cake crock in style. Excellent coverage of the design across the front, measuring an impressive 11 1/2" long along the curve of the vessel, from edge of stump to tip of tail. Provenance: A recently-surfaced example. Excellent condition with staining to surface and underside, a small amount of fry to bird's eye, a 3/4" iron ping to interior, a two very minor glazed-over chips to one handle. H 12" ; Diam. 13 1/8".
