Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug with Pittsburgh, PA Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1875, ovoid jug with tooled spout, decorated with boldly-brushed freehand vining above the stenciled advertising, "From / SCHMIDT & FRIDAY / Wines & Liquors / Pittsburgh, Pa." Base with cobalt-script "2" flanked by wavy stripes above a freehand stripe. An in-the-firing surface chip to front with a small amount of painted blue touch-up to chip. Painted blue chipping to base. A smooth 3" in-the-firing contact mark to side of jug near base. Spout chips. A small handle chip.
