Exceptional Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Spittoon, Palatine, WV origin, circa 1885, cylindrical form with carved, semi-circular opening at shoulder and recessed top with central circular opening, decorated around the body with five alternating stenciled designs of a rose and a rose with berries. Additionally decorated below the opening at the shoulder with a stenciled rose-and-star motif. Opening at shoulder decorated with cobalt stripes along the interior edge and a cobalt highlight around its border. Top decorated with a series of brushed wavy stripes. The finest Palatine, WV stoneware spittoon that we have seen. A 3 1/2" jagged crack to top edge, which includes a thin 3 1/2" crack and 1 1/4" crack descending from it on the exterior. Otherwise excellent condition. H 4 3/4" ; D 7 7/8".
