One-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG", PA origin, circa 1870, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, handle at base on reverse, and wood-and-wire bail handle; decorated on the reverse with a brushed tulip motif and on the front with a wreath surrounding the spout. Cobalt highlights to ears, handle terminals, and maker's mark. Includes a tin spout cover. A 1 1/4" in-the-firing surface flake (contact mark) to left of decoration and a smooth 1 3/8" contact mark to right of decoration. A chip to handle at base. Two chips to spout, one or both of which occurred in the firing.
