Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Eagle Motif, Stenciled "Eagle Pottery. / BAYLESS McCARTHY / & CO. / LOUISVILLE. KY," James Hamilton & Co., Greensboro, PA, circa 1870, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large stenciled design of a spread-winged eagle holding arrows in one claw and a banner in its beak, inscribed "Eagle Pottery." Stenciled below with the advertising, "BAYLESS McCARTHY / & CO. / LOUISVILLE. KY." Freehand stripe decoration to below rim. Base stenciled with a large, bold-faced "3," flanked by fan-shaped stenciling. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A sealed 9" crack from rim on front. Heavy chipping to left handle, some of which occurred in the firing and is glazed-over. Heavy chipping to right handle.
