Unusual One-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Ironton, OH Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and flattened rim, featuring the stenciled cobalt advertising, "A.C. CLARK. / JOBBER IN / STAPLE AND FANCY / GROCERIES / 131 & 133 CENTER ST. / IRONTON. OHIO." Inscription is accented with a stenciled flourish below and small stenciled foliate motifs to left and right. Freehand straight and wavy stripe decoration to shoulder and base. A 1 3/4" in-the-firing, glazed-over chip to front of rim. A small, pre-firing chip to side of jar, which is glazed over. Jar is slightly raised on the underside, keeping it from sitting perfectly flat.
