Rare Six-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stenciled "C.F. HETZEL & CO. / CUMBERLAND, MD," Western PA origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large stenciled rose motif above the advertising, "C.F. HETZEL & CO. / DEALERS IN / GROCERIES / & LIQUORS. / CUMBERLAND / MD". Freehand stripe decoration to shoulder and base. Freehand "6" flanked by dashes at base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Restoration to base on front and underside, including repaint to the number "6" and the dashes to the left and right. H 16 1/2".
