Fine Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Freehand Decoration, attributed to D.G. Thompson, Morgantown, WV, circa 1870, cylindrical jar with semi-rounded rim, incised banding and raised molding to shoulder, and extruded lug handles, profusely-decorated with undulating vine, foliate, and floral motifs, separated by freehand stripes. Freehand "5" flanked by flowers at base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed "5" on reverse. Among the finest-colored examples of Morgantown stoneware that we have offered, featuring classic Thompson Pottery brushwork. A 2 3/8" flaked area to underside of right handle, as well as a minor chip to front terminal of right handle. A minor chip to interior of rim. Jar rim is somewhat out-of-round.
