Very Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Presentation Sundial, Inscribed "H.C. Bailey", attributed to Richard C. Remmey, Philadelphia, PA, circa 1885, wheel-thrown circular slab with incised Roman numerals and minute markings and impressed North, South, and East notations, all highlighted in cobalt slip. Additionally incised with the cobalt-highlighted owner's name, "H.C. Bailey", at base. Includes original brass gnomon. Exceptional form. One of two examples of an American stoneware sundial that we have ever offered. Literature: A similar example in the collection of Winterthur Museum, Garden, and Library in Winterthur, DE, is incised "H.R. Mitchell / Philada" and illustrated on page 5 of Phil Schaltenbrand's Big Ware Turners. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with some expected oxidation to gnomon. Diameter 8 1/4".
