Fine Six-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Eagle Motif, Stenciled "JAMES HAMILTON & Co / Eagle Pottery / GREENSBORO, Pa.", circa 1870, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a stenciled design of a Federal eagle with banner, inscribed "Eagle Pottery". Surface of jar further decorated with freehand stripes and vining, large Hamilton & Jones maker's stenciling, and a freehand "6" flanked by dashes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Strong use of stenciled and freehand treatments with top-to-bottom cobalt application. Very nice condition. An in-the-firing discolored area to front base. A chip to each handle. A few faint hairlines on underside, continuing onto base. H 16".
