Ten-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stenciled "HAMILTON & JONES. / GREENSBORO. / PA.", circa 1875, large-sized, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with freehand stripes and vining at the shoulder. Body of jar with Hamilton & Jones maker's stenciling flanked by two stenciling tulips, along with two stenciled foliate motifs at the midsection. Base stenciled "10 / GALLON.", flanked by stenciled leaves. Freehand stripe to base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Desirable size with unusual incorporation of the word, "GALLON", into stenciling. Spider lines on underside, including one faint line that continues 3 1/2" onto base on reverse. A small chip to each handle. A minor in-the-firing chip to base on front, which is glazed over. H 21 1/2".
