One-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug with Pittsburgh, PA Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jug with tooled spout, decorated with a graduated swag and wavy line above the stenciled advertising, "W.H. HOLMES / RYE / WHISKEY / WINES & C / 117 Water St. & 154 / FIRST AVE. Pitts". Cobalt stripe to base. A large spout flake extending from reverse to right side of spout. A minor spout nick. Crazing to reverse and side of jug. A recessed area to left side of jug at shoulder. A long, smooth in-the-firing contact mark to right side of jug near base. A small amount of in-the-firing residue to underside.
