Extremely Rare One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Nesting Bird Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA", circa 1865, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, unusual stepped base, and applied clay ears fitted with a wood-and-wire bail handle. Decorated on the front with a large wreath flanking the maker's mark and spout, along with a small wreath at the base of the spout. Reverse decorated with a third wreath surrounding a nesting bird with spotted wing. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals, ears, maker's mark and capacity mark. The batter pail's nesting bird motif, scarce in its own right on any Cowden & Wilcox products, is highly unusual on this form. Among the finest stoneware batter pails we have offered in recent years. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with some minor wear to spout and handle at base on reverse. H 9".
