Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Water Cooler with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA", circa 1865, cylindrical form with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and circular bunghole at base, decorated with two large spitting tulips emanating from a leafy stem. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, handle terminals, and area surrounding bunghole. A highly unusual form for this desirable Central Pennsylvania maker. Two chips to exterior of bunghole. Exfoliation to interior of bunghole. Additional exfoliation to the interior base of cooler. A 1 1/4" chip to rim on side of cooler. A 1" chip to interior of rim. Some exfoliation to base area on reverse. Some minor exfoliation to base area on sides of cooler. A faint 3 3/4" vertical line under right handle.
