Unusual Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "P. HERRMANN", Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and ribbed lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with two large bluebell design. Wavy cobalt highlights to handle terminals, joined by a curving line of cobalt. Impressed with Peter Herrmann three-gallon capacity mark under one handle. An atypical floral motif in Herrmann's work. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a forty-year Maryland collection. An in-the-firing stone ping to one handle, which includes a 7/8" cracked or reglued piece. A shallow in-the-firing flake to same handle. Two shallow chips to opposite handle. Small chips to interior of rim.
