Monumental Seven-Gallon Stoneware Water Cooler with Exuberant Cobalt Floral Decoration, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1840, cylindrical form with tapered shoulder, squared rim, applied lug handles, and circular bunghole, brush-decorated with an elaborate flowering plant emanating from the bunghole. The design includes flowers extending to the left side of the cooler and a grape-like clusters extending to the right. Reverse with horizontal floral motif at the shoulder. Shoulder with swag-and-flower motif. Cobalt highlights to bunghole and handle terminals. Featuring an unusually large size and superb color, this cooler is among the most heavily-decorated examples of the form that we have ever offered. Provenance: Crocker Farm, Inc., July 17, 2004, Lot 82. Very nice condition. Small rim chips. Minor chipping to bunghole. A long Y-shaped line to underside, including a line continuing 1 7/8" up reverse. H 19 1/2".
