Fine One-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Cross Motif, Stenciled "J.P. PARKER / JANE LEW", WV origin, circa 1870, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, the front featuring a stenciled design of a cross surrounded by four stars, above J.P. Parker maker's stenciling, flanked by wide, wavy brushwork. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a twenty-year private collection. Two rim chips. Two cracks from rim, measuring 3 3/4" and 3 1/2". A large Y-shaped hairline on underside, extending 2 1/4" up base. An in-the-firing crack extending partway around base area.
