Scarce Five-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Churn, Stenciled "J.P. PARKER / JANE LEW", WV, circa 1870, semi-ovoid churn with flared collar and applied lug handles, featuring the stenciled signature, "J.P. PARKER / JANE LEW", surrounded by folky, coarse brushwork. Brushed "5" at shoulder and incised "5" under one handle. Excellent form and size for this maker. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a twenty-year private collection. Very nice condition, particularly for this maker. A tight surface line on underside, not visible on interior. Exfoliation to Albany slip on interior base area. Wear to inner rim for lid. A 3/8" stone ping to interior of collar. H 18 1/4".
