Rare Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Crock, Stenciled "S.A. COLVIN & SONS, / JANE LEW, W. VA.", circa 1880, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, featuring the large stenciled signature of Seymour A. Colvin and his sons, surrounding a stenciled geometric design. Shoulder with freehand "2" flanked by highlights. Signed Jane Lew stoneware pieces by members of the Colvin family, the successors to J.P. Parker, are considered scarce. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a twenty-year private collection. A small chip to one handle. A horizontal crack at base on reverse / side, which forms a T, continuing a short distance onto underside. Some light crazing to shoulder by one handle. Flakes to Albany slip on interior base area.
