Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Harvest Jug, Stamped "SAM'L. I. IRVINE / NEWVILLE, PA", circa 1865, beehive-form with applied wide and narrow pouring spouts and horizontal strap handle, with cobalt highlights surrounding the handle and spouts as well as highlights to the maker's mark and capacity mark. A sealed spider crack to underside, becoming a long sealed crack extending from base to shoulder area. Exceptional form. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor approximately forty years ago. Significant cracks on reverse / sides of jug emanating from base, with a crack extending off from this damage onto front, where it forms a tight X at shoulder. This damage includes a large reglued section at base. Two chips and light wear to larger spout. H (to top of handle) 14 1/2".
