Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. SWANK & CO. / JOHNSTOWN, PA", circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and arching tab handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a sweeping tulip motif, applied over a slip-washed surface. Underside of one handle with brushed "4" underscored by an elaborate looping line design. Underside of opposite handle with impressed "4" and Swank maker's mark, underscored by a looping line design. Leaf-like cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Very nice condition with a 1 1/2" flake to interior of rim, a small chip on interior of rim, and a minor chip on exterior of rim.
