Scarce Small-Sized Stoneware Canning Jar with Stenciled Cobalt Pear Motif, Stenciled "PALATINE POTTERY CO / PALATINE / W. VA", circa 1875, tapered jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded wax sealer rim, the front decorated with a stenciled design of a pear surrounded by Palatine Pottery Company maker's stenciling. The rarity of this example is in its size. While Palatine pear-decorated canning jars typically fall within the 8" to 10" size, this example stands just 6 3/8" tall. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Excellent condition with some old residue to top of rim and a small bit of salt to underside. One side of jar with slight in-the-firing warping. H 6 3/8".
