Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "JOHN YOUNG & CO.", Harrisburg, PA origin, circa 1856-1858, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a boldly-brushed tulip plant bearing two blossoms with large stamens. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Desirable and difficult-to-find maker's mark, unusual size, and strong decoration. Large sealed crack from rim, extending onto underside. A 1 3/4" glazed-over chip to rim, which occurred in the firing. A shallow in-the-firing chip to top of rim.
