Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Solid-Bodied Bird Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a folky brushed cobalt design of a standing bird with long tail and spotted wing, its body heavily-shaded with cobalt feather detail. A highly unusual design from one of Pennsylvania's most prized makers. Few solid-bodied birds from the Cowden & Wilcox factory are known. Essentially as-made condition with some wear to spots on bottom half of bird design, along with a very minor in-the-firing chip on interior of spout.
