Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Butter Crock with Cobalt Swan Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, short cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed cobalt design of a swan with heavily-brushed wing and stylized water below. Excellent form and size. Desirable figural decoration. Some in-the-firing fry to eye of swan. 7/8" chip on interior of rim on reverse. Small chip on top of one handle. Minor nick on underside at edge.
