Rare and Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Tulip Decoration, Stamped "JOHN YOUNG & CO / HARRISBURG PA.," circa 1856, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with boldly-brushed design of a tulip plant extending up the front. Plant features two smaller closed-petal tulips at base leading to two very large open tulips with large dashed stamens. Excellent decoration and color on this rare, early example of Harrisburg stoneware. 1 3/4" x 7/8" in-the-firing base chip on reverse, a small section of which is glazed-over. Shallow 1 3/8" chip on interior of rim. Small chips and knicks to inner rim where a lid would rest. A chip to one handle. A 5 1/2" Y-shaped crack extending up from base on side of jar. This crack joins a very tight spidering hairline on underside, which is not visible on interior.
