Unusual Two-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock, Stenciled "JAS. HAMILTON & CO. / GREENSBORO, PA," circa 1875, cylindrical crock with large, semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with the stenciled cobalt signature of James Hamilton accented with stenciled flourishes. Large stenciled "2" to right of signature. Includes a cobalt-decorated stoneware lid, Baltimore origin, circa 1870. Cake crocks are a scarce form in Western PA stoneware. Crock in excellent, essentially as-made condition with some minor nicks and wear on interior of rim. Lid with a very large reglued section, along with a chip and two minor nicks to flange on underside.
