Outstanding Six-Gallon Stoneware Water Cooler with Large Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "O.L. & AK BALLARD / BURLINGTON, VT," circa 1860, ovoid cooler with circular bunghole, applied lug handles, and tall collar with semi-rounded rim, decorated with a very large slip-trailed design of a bird resting on a tree branch. Bird is embellished with a ringed neck, crested head, and fan-shaped tail accented with spots. Excellent form and wonderful decoration, executed in deep, thickly-applied cobalt. Some professional restoration to bunghole. 3/4" chip to body on reverse. Minor nick to end of one handle. 6" hairline from rim on reverse. 3" surface line from rim, visible on exterior only. A few surface lines to body, not visible on the interior.
