Exceptional Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Chicken Pecking Corn Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO. / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1850, cylindrical crock with heavily-tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a boldly slip-trailed design of a chicken with heavily-shaded body and spotted tail, pecking kernels of corn from a ground with shrubs and grasses. Exceptional color with dark, vivid cobalt against a light beige ground. Excellent size, decoration, and maker. Approximately 6" Y-shaped hairline on reverse, partially visible on interior. Stain on reverse. Small chips on interior of rim.
