Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "THOMAS D. CHOLLAR / CORTLAND," New York State origin, circa 1840, finely-potted, highly-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed cobalt floral design with drooping blossom. Brushed cobalt "4" to right of decoration. Large cobalt highlight over maker's mark. Large inverted Y-shaped crack descending from rim, measuring approximately 9" long and 15" wide. Two large chips and a few smaller chips to edge on underside, probably in-the-firing.
