Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, Stamped "HOLMES & PURDY / DUNDEE, NY," second quarter 19th century, ovoid jar with flared rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed leaf design at the midsection, the maker's and capacity marks with brushed cobalt highlights. Heavy chipping to rim. Large in-the-firing vertical separation on interior, visible as a 9 1/2" vertical hairline on front left side. Additional 6" hairline from rim on front, associated with this separation. Two other shorter hairlines from rim. Cracks on underside, extending onto base.
