Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Cream Jar with Cobalt Gooney Bird Decoration, Stamped "M. WOODRUFF / CORTLAND," NY State origin, circa 1867-1869, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a long-necked bird with crest, open mouth, and upswept wing. Looping flourish to right of bird. Distinctive to Cortland stoneware, the "gooney bird" motif is regarded as one of the most iconic and expressive avian designs in American stoneware. Essentially as-made condition. Spot of staining to front. Over-salting to cobalt. Stone ping at base on reverse. Flaking to underside only.
