Outstanding Six-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Goony-Bird-in-Wreath Decoration, Stamped "M. WOODRUFF / CORTLAND," NY State origin, circa 1867-1869, large-sized, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a "goony bird" with crest, open mouth, spotted body, and solid-cobalt wing, perched within a large wreath. Impressed above with a cobalt-highlighted asterisk. Additional cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A work of imposing size and superb color, featuring Woodruff's iconic bird motif with unusual wreath-bordered composition. Excellent condition with the following minor flaws: a few small rim chips, a small area of exfoliation near base under one handle, a small area of exfoliation to underside, a short in-the-firing fissure to interior of rim, some light spots of staining, and minor fry to some edges of cobalt. H 13 1/4".
