Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration and "1874" Date, Stamped "J. SWANK & CO. / JOHNSTOWN, PA," ovoid jar with semi-squared rim and high-set pocket handles, decorated with two sweeping freehand tulips on the front and back, as well as the unusual date "1874" underscored under one handle. Handle terminals decorated with floral brushwork, and opposite handle decorated with a freehand 4 underscored by four stripes. Dated stoneware by the Swank Pottery of Johnstown is considered rare. A few in-the-firing chips. 8" hairline to left of one handle. A small chip on interior and exterior of rim. Y-shaped hairline at base, continuing to underside and 1 1/2" up another side of jar.
