Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "WELLS & RICHARDS / READING, PA," circa 1845, ovoid pitcher with tooled rim, decorated completely around the body with four large cobalt tulips. Collar decorated with heavy cobalt swags. Impressed below the collar with the highly unusual maker's mark "WELLS & RICHARDS / READING BERKS CO PA" in large block letters. Desirable form and maker. Professionally restored spout. Restored crack at base, extending partway up reverse of pitcher, not affecting decoration. This crack connects to a 2 1/2" hairline on underside. Additional small restoration to a horizontal crack or hairline on top of handle. A few base chips. Two minor chips to left side of rim on reverse. H 12 3/4".
