Sixteen-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Eagle Decoration, Stenciled "T.F. REPPERT / EAGLE POTTERY / GREENSBORO, PA," circa 1880, large-sized cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a crisply-stenciled federal eagle with shield across its chest, holding olive branches and arrows. Stenciled stars below the words "EAGLE POTTERY" above. Freehand vining and stripes at shoulder. Base with a brushed 16 with flourishes. Some in-the-firing sunken areas to wall of jar. 9" vertical hairline under one handle, which does not extend through to interior. Overfiring to left side of front. Contact marks on reverse. Jar is somewhat out-of-round at rim. H 23 1/4".
