Exceptional Westerwald Stoneware "GR" Jug with Incised Decoration, German origin, circa 1740, bulbous jug with tooled foot and heavily-tooled collar, decorated with a large applied "GR" medallion featuring a crown and opposing bird heads. Medallion surrounded by elaborate incised foliate design embellished with impressed circular berries. Decoration highlighted in cobalt slip. Collar highlighted in manganese slip. Impressed "4" to right of handle. A very fine example of 18th century Westerwald stoneware. Hairline on underside extending 2 3/4" up front of jug. Minor 1/2" hairline from rim above handle. H 7 1/4".
