Scarce Stoneware Batter Pail with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG. PA," circa 1865, ovoid form with tubular spout, handle at base on reverse, and clay ears attached to a wood and metal bail handle. Decorated on the front with wreath-like brushwork and dotted flowers flanking the spout, as well as leaf-like brushwork underscoring the maker's mark. Reverse decorated with two brushed cobalt spitting tulips. Includes tin coverings. Highly desirable form and excellent decoration. Professional restoration to spout. Rim chip. 2 3/4" hairline from rim. Approximately 7 1/2" horizontal line on front, extending into spout, which does not extend through to interior. H 8 3/4".
