Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, Stamped "HAMILTON & PERSHING, / JOHNSTOWN PA," circa 1852-1855, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and extruded arched-lug handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with a horizontal stem bearing paired groups of leaves. Impressed below one handle with a three-gallon capacity mark and the rare oval maker's mark of James H. Hamilton and Emmanuel Pershing, underscored by graduated stripes. Additional graduated stripe decoration below opposing handle and cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Base area/underside broken into sections and reglued. A large rim chip with a long crack descending from it. Another smaller rim chip and minor U-shaped surface line to rim. A chip to one handle. H 11 1/4".
