Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Churn, Incised "X," attributed to David Drake at Lewis Miles's Stony Bluff Manufactory, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1855, ovoid form with arched lug handles, the surface covered in a streaky, olive-colored alkaline glaze with beige runs. Incised "X" at shoulder on one side, a hallmark of Drake's work. This incised letter is formed with a two-pronged stylus creating a raised line spanning the center of each incised line. Entire collar lost with chipping around remaining rim, a 5" crack from rim, and a faint, approximately 7" vertical line to midsection, possibly in-the-firing. H 12 1/2".
