Rare Three-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Churn with Kaolin Slip Decoration, Stamped "CHANDLER MAKER," Thomas Chandler, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850, cylindrical form with flared collar, rounded rim, and flattened tab handles, decorated on the front with a slip-trailed wreath surrounding a script "3," and on the reverse with an unusual turnip-shaped floral motif surrounding a script "3" with flourish below. Gray-green alkaline-glazed ground. Restoration to majority of collar. Crack in base of collar. Proper left side of churn with a 4 3/4" line and large area of restoration. Front of churn with a small worn spot to midsection. A small restored chip to proper right handle. A 3" surface line to interior body of churn, not visible on exterior. H 16 3/4".
