Salt-Glazed Stoneware Jar, attributed John Wesley Carpenter, Piper's Gap, Carroll County, VA, fourth quarter 19th century, ovoid jar with flattened rim, heavily tooled shoulder, and arched lug handles with depressed terminals, dipped in a streaky whitish slip and covered in a clear salt glaze. Literature: For related examples, see Compton, "John Wesley Carpenter: Tradition, Innovation, and Adaptation in a Shattered Post-Civil War South," Ceramics in America 2023. Provenance: Carole Wahler Collection. Two rim chips, measuring 1 3/8" and 5/8", and other minor rim chips. Significant chipping to one handle. A shallow 1 1/8" flake to opposing handle. Wear to bottom edge and underside of jar. Some typical small, in-the-firing flaws to surface. H 12 3/8".
