Fine Large-Sized Redware Bowl with Three-Color Slip Decoration, Hagerstown, MD origin, first quarter 19th century, flaring bowl with narrow-footed base and tall, coved rim molding, the lead-glazed interior decorated with line of slip-trailed yellow slip interspersed with a wavy line of copper slip and a wavy line of manganese slip. Outstanding size, condition, and provenance. The majority of redware bowls of this age and origin succumbed to moderate to significant wear from use. Provenance: Ex-Mary Thornton, 1955; Dr. and Mrs. Donald A. Shelley Collection; The Shelley Pioneer Collection of Americana, Pook & Pook, April 2007, lot 324. A very old, 2" shallow flake to rim as well as a very old, 2 1/4" shallow flake to exterior of rim. Other minor rim chips. Some light wear to interior. Chipping around foot. Diam. 16" ; H 5 3/4".
