Exceptional Lidded Redware Jar with Bold Manganese Slash Decoration, attributed to the Cain Pottery, Sullivan County, TN, mid 19th century, small-sized, ovoid jar with flared rim, incised straight and wavy line designs to the shoulder, and thin rounded foot. Finely-crafted ribbed strap handles extend from the shoulder of the jar to the underside of the rim. Jar decorated with bold slashes of manganese around the body and on top of the handles. Surface covered in a clear lead glaze over a vibrant mottled pumpkin orange and light orange ground. Original domed lid with heavily-tooled bands and raised, button-shaped finial, also decorated with manganese and covered in a clear lead glaze. Midsection of lid incised "8". One of the finest examples of Great Road redware to surface in recent years, surviving in remarkable condition. Provenance: Crocker Farm, Inc., November 31, 2012. Jar in superb condition, with only minor base chips. Two chips to edge of lid and some small chips to flange on underside of lid. H (excluding lid) 7 5/8" ; H (incl lid) 10".
